Finally made it to Ulsan!

Posted in Bucket List, Destinations, Outdoors with tags , on August 2, 2010 by Gina

So we’ve been here for almost 6 months already and we still hadn’t made it over to see our friends in Ulsan – who inspired us to come to Korea in the first place. Well this weekend we finally checked it off the list and made it over to see their city before they peace out of Korea and book it over to Vietnam. We spent the weekend eating good food, drinking mokkoli and sightseeing at Kings Rock. Check out the highlights below, and our flickr page for all the pics. Our camera died mid-visit, so hopefully more stolen pictures to come later. 🙂

Seafood Ladies

After 2 hours of leisurely “hiking” our curiosity pulled us to the women calling out to the sightseers above, beckoning them to come down and try some of the seafood they freshly plucked out of the sea. Since we have limited courage in the newly dead seafood arena, we bought 4 large oysters and tried one each (turning down the sea cucumber, sea urchins, and other unidentifiable items). They were not awful, and I’m sure some of the freshest we could ever buy. After that we headed to a restaurant that served cooked seafood to satiate our (or at least Shauna and my) fishy cravings.

Overall lovely weekend and we were so happy to finally visit our friends in their home city. Thanks Shauna and Randy!

Parents in Busan

So it’s been 10 days into Parent Extravaganza 2010 and we just came back from a lovely weekend in Busan. After an arduous journey my parents finally arrived in Korea after being delayed in Japan for a night and arguing with their hotel about the definition of “paid for with miles”.  I was thrilled to finally see them and we had a great time going to all the sightseeing places we’ve missed in Busan so far.

Weekend Highlights

Posted in Daegu Happenings, Food, Outdoors with tags , on May 17, 2010 by Gina

This past weekend was pretty relaxing and felt as if we’re settling in a bit more. Friday Joel was craving real food after having been sick for a month so we headed over to Gorilla Burger. Let me just say, might want to stick to the burgers, as the chicken sandwich I had was less than satisfying. But the burgers – delish.

It’s been a while…

So I know we haven’t posted anything in a week or so, guess we’ve just been feeling lazy. And I am going to be even more lazy right now by instead of writing a blog post myself, directing you to a friend’s blog who has written about our lovely day at the jimjilbang, and stealing others’ photos from our day in the park.

Check out a post about our girls day in a jimjilbang (spa) by Suseong Lake.

Here are some pictures of Children’s Day. We had a day off from work and spent it in a park playing frisbee, drinking, eating, listening to other talented EPIKers play music, and doing a whole lot of nothing. Beautiful day.

All Things Rice Festival

Posted in Destinations, Outdoors with tags , on April 19, 2010 by Gina

This weekend we headed on over to Gyeong-Ju to check out the Rice Cake and Rice Wine Festival. Since neither Joel or I particularly like rice cakes, it was the – let’s drink as much rice wine as we can tolerate festival. Turns out there are some pluses to being a foreigner, because as soon as we walked in they handed us a free shot glass to hang around our necks. We spent the day sampling the fares, and then headed out to do some sightseeing. Lovely day, and we’ll definitely be going back to see the rest of the sites. Highlights below and click here for the rest of the pics.

Hiking Mt. Palgong Mountain Mountain

Posted in Outdoors with tags , on April 14, 2010 by Joel

The title might sound a little redundant, but we only recently found out that san in Korean means mountain. So a couple of weekends ago when we hiked Palgong-san, we were calling it Mt. Palgongsan, Palgongsan Mountain, or some other incorrect combination. This might explain why it was so difficult to get directions. Aside from giving us a strenuous workout and a wonderful Sunday afternoon, Palgon-san taught us to show a little respect for our Korean elders.
